September 21, 2014: F*** NO!!!!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

“Fall’s my FAVORITE season! The leaves are so pretty, and the air is crisp, and the apples! Oh, THE APPLES!!!!”.

– the type of pronouncement @jonselig truly hates hearing, upon autumn’s arrival. Because that means winter’s coming soon. Thus the title of this week’s post.

Summer’s gone. How depressing. This feeling needs to be crushed into a fine powder and snorted up our collective nose.  Thankfully, this week’s show’s got that sort of potential.

Fresh off a tour of his native Scotland, where he simultaneously argued for AND against secession from the United Kingdom, is Darren Henwood!  He will be your host, MC, and flamboyant ball of Gaelic energy for this evening.  The man’s opened for Maz Jobrani and had his own show at Zoofest, so PAY HIM HEED!

Darren Henwood: Frequent Comedy Hostel host/Scot/non-tweeter/casual relaxer/ponderer/expert poser.

Your headliner is native Montrealer Rishi Arya.  Today, he calls “Loss An-GA-Leez” home.  He  headlines! If THAT’S not enough to lighten your load, we also have:

John St. Godard! Mariam Khan! Leonard Yelle! Pantelis! Jon Selig!

Show’s at 8:00pm, Sunday night. Come in, sit down, and settle in for some drinks. Pitchers are just $12. That’s pretty sweet, right? Enjoy the show! Later on, a hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-think or can.

1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance) is the address. If you’re an STM kinda person, get off at Metro Berri UQAM.

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Seth Meyers is the new Jimmy Fallon! Chipotle is the new honey mustard! Sunday is the new Thursday (or it could be)!

Look, anything’s possible.  If “Bullets and Burgers” can be #1 on TripAdvisors’s Las Vegas rankings, a Sunday night comedy show in a hostel can be #17 in Montreal!

What’s certainly possible is that we have a great show this week. Maritimer (that’s Canada’s east-coast for you Canadianically-handicapped) Paul Ash hosts this week’s edition of Comedy Hostel!

Your headliner travels the place all over to make people laugh -put your hands together for Jeff Schouela!

But wait – there’s more!  Also performing:

James Manella! Kate Conner! Carlin Potter! Jacob Greco! Eric Arseneault!

Sunday, September 7, 2014: The Tradition Continues!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

As you most certainly know by now, we’ve moved our show to Sunday night. We had a successful re-debut this past week, and this week, we will carry on this new Sunday night tradition of amazing stand-up comedy, cheap beer, and a delightful intercultural audience. If you want to be a part of the modern day Sunday night Montreal zeitgeist, then don’t miss this (or any week’s) show!

Fresh from conquering New York City, is Comedy Hostel’s prodigal son, Peter J. Radomski! He’s done Just For Laughs, is the MC of the Blue Light Burlesque, and is one of the funniest guys in town. He’ll headline the second Sunday in our history.

Hosting, is Jon Selig. He’s tall, gangly, and is the mainstay at this show. He recently made it to the semi-finals of the Ottawa Comedy Competition at Absolute Comedy, performs all over Montreal, and will be your spiritual guide on this evening of funnitude.

Also performing:

DeAnne Smith! Kris Dulgar! Walter J. Lyng! Jakub Stachurski! Tristan MacKinlay! Bruno Ly!

August 31, 2014: Screw Mondays

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

They suck. But they’re inevitable. You need to forget they’re coming. Start your new pre-emptive attack on Mondays with comedy every Sunday night, showtime at 8pm. The beauty of this Sunday debut is the next day is Labour Day, so you can nurse your hangover without your annoying coworker pointing out how you look like you were drinking late on a Sunday night! We had a great run on Thursday nights for 21 months, but Sunday, August 31st, we begin a NEW era! Show time will be earlier in the past – 8pm!

Your headliner is from (chip)Moncton, New Brunswick, and he’s done Juste Pour Rire (French edition of Just For Laughs), and Zoofest, and is bi-hilarious (English AND French) – JC Surette!!!

Your host hails from parts unknown. I mean, it’s a town in Australia that no one’s heard of, but the guy’s damn funny – Paul Worrall!!!

Also performing: From NYC: Dan Ramos! Tranna Wintour! Paul Baluyot! Emma Wilkie!

August 28, 2014: The Last Thursday

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Very quick update as @jonselig is pre-occupied with non-comedy related matters:

This Thursday is our LAST Thursday show before we make the permanent move to Sundays. Yes, SUNDAYS. Go to church, praise whatever lord you may or may not believe in, and then wind your day down with international travellers, blasphemous humour and copious amounts of alcohol. Good times await!

But in the meantime, we have a FINAL Thursday show to end an era!

Christophe Davidson is an ex-Montrealer now living in Toronto. He’s done Just For Laughs and tours all over Canada. So, there’s THAT.

Oh, and then there’s Rodney Ramsey. He’ll be your host and MC. He’s done Just For Laughs, appeared on CBC’s “Debaters”, and has toured all over Canada. So, there’s THAT too.

And then, after THAT, we have a whole bunch of other funny comics: Jakub Stachurski, Les Feisties (Annie Deschamps & Anne-Marie Dupras), Carlos Vezina, Abdul Butt, and all the way from Ottawa, Jimmy Cassidy! Laugh at THAT (er, “them”).

Show’s at 8:45pm, Thursday night. Come in, sit down, and settle in for some drinks. Pitchers are just $12. That’s pretty sweet, right? Enjoy the show! Later on, a hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-think or can.

August 21, 2014: Dog Day Thursday

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

(Quick, IMPORTANT note before this week’s show preview!

The show will be moving to Sunday nights after August 28th (this week and next will be on Thursday, but beyond that – SUNDAYS! Please update all electronic calendars and reminding devices as of that date. We’ll let you know when the 1st Sunday show will be. It will start a bit earlier, and will be an amazing way to wind down your weekend and help you forget that tomorrow’s Monday. On to this week’s show…)

Put down those poop-collection bags, no canines (or Al Pacinos) will be present at this Thursday’s show. Whoever named August the “Dog Days of Summer” sure didn’t have a great handle on dogs, summers, or the rest of the year. To commemorate such absurdity, we’re naming this week’s show after a truly awful expression. Sometimes, you just gotta mix things up! Yeah!!!

To mix things around and around, is your headliner Morgan O’Shea. Yes, THAT Morgan O’Shea! He of 2014 Just For Laughs’ fame! The guy’s had a big year, so we’re going to celebrate that.

Morgan O'Shea's not that into Twitter. He's funny though (6-27-13).

Morgan O’Shea’s not that into Twitter. He’s funny though (6-27-13).

Your host is neither lady nor gentleman, but he’s one half of the “Ladies & Gentleman” sketch and production team (along with frequent Comedy Hostel guest Dan Carin)! He’s actually TOO gentlemanly, and a master of postivity and funnitude – Chris Sandiford!

Also performing: Guido Cocomello! Adam Susser! Geoffrey Appelbaum! Nour Hadidi! Mike Carrozza! Jon Selig!

August 14, 2014: Aunt Gladys’ Shock

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

“Oh, dearie me!” exclaimed Aunt Gladys as she heard this week’s Comedy Hostel lineup!

“It’ll be alright Aunt Gladys! No one’s ever died from too many funny comedians on one show. Worst case sceneario will be some shortness of breath. Take some nitrate pills, keep a hot water bottle on your chest for several hours – you’ll be good as new!”

Thankfully, Aunt Gladys doesn’t have a computer and won’t hear about this show. Wouldn’t want her to be adversely affected by the sweet, sweet, comedy goodness this week’s show offers! Who’s on this week’s show, anyway?

Fresh off a run of shows at Just For Laughs’ Zoofest is your host Jess Salomon! She’s performed all kinds of Fringe Festivals, comedy festivals, and festive festivals!

Headlining is Eman! She has her own TV special and performed at Just For Laughs. Enough with the credits – she’s FUNNY! Watch:

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE:

JFL’s Morgan O’Shea! JFL/Zoofest/Frequent Comedy Hostel host Darren Henwood! JFL/Zoofest’s Scott Carter! Karl Knox! Jon Selig!

August 7, 2014: Homecoming Celebrations

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Summer’s plowing forward at breakneck speed. Reports say that July just smashed into August. OH NO! All will be fine – we have your recovery lined up. A monster night of comedy cures all shattered anythings.

It’s always nice when massive stars return from whence they came. They’ve gone to fly their comedy spaceships through brighter galaxies, are pushing the boundaries of success, and don’t really need to look back at the solar system they’re wake. Several comics on this week’s show have their comedy roots in Montreal, and we’re excited they’re back, if only temporarily.

Your headliner is one of those dudes. Massimo is one of Montreal’s favorites (despite the fact that he now lives in Toronto). He’s a force-of-hilarity onstage! He’s performed at Just For Laughs, and headlines shows all around Canada. Don’t miss this….

Your host happens to live here. He also performs regularly all around town, but was just in Gatineau for a night, so he’s perfect to spearhead all these homecoming celebrations. John St. Godard, everyone!

Ali Hassan (JFL, Strombo Show, CBC radio) and Jeremy Dobski also got their comedy starts here in town, and make their temporary returns by making with their funny.

Also performing: Shawn Stenhouse! Chris Venditto! Jon Selig! And from Australia: Ben-T!

July 31, 2014: Dueling Headliners!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

There will be no rural abductions or other unspeakable, taboo hillbilly acts at this week’s show (well, you actually never know!), but a duel will take place – and it may get nasty.

Not one but two headliners, will make this week’s show one for the ages, and may change views of many a traveler on how nice & sweet Canadians actually are!  The prize? Squat in terms of cash or prizes, but both get to perform for Montreal’s most fun comedy audience.  Onto the combatants”

Derek Seguin just wrapped up a stint as part of Just For Laughs’ Nasty Show.  He tours all over Canada and destorys crowds wherever he goes.  Strap yourself in! Or “on” – whichever. Derek in Winnipeg:

And in the other corner“…

Hailing from Newfoundland, weighing in at god only knows how much, your other headliner – Matt Wright!  Rather than us bla-bla-blahing about him, he’s captured all you need to know on his bio on his website. READ THAT!  Maybe a clip of his comedy will get you in the mood.

These two guys are actually great friends, so it will be the friendliest, funniest competition in comedy history.

It’s all hosted by the gangly curator of The Comedy Hostel, fresh off his 3-show run in Ottawa, Jon Selig!

Also performing:  Jess Salomon! Jakub Stachurski! Kevin Shustack! From Halifax, Ryan Fried!

July 24, 2014: The Comedy Hostel Festival aka “Night of Surprise!”

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

With a massive comedy festival in town, this week in Montreal is a mondo celebration of funny people talking into microphones.  Comedy Hostel is doing its part to celebrate! We’ve decided to allow our weekly show TO HAPPEN!  Screw it – we’ll do our own thang.  Only thing is, it will be shrouded in mystery!  There are SOME particulars to share, so let’s get to it!

The show has a caretaker!  Paul Baluyot performs all over Canada, is a local favorite, and one of the funniest folks’ in Montreal. He’s going to host this thing, and steer it away any metaphorical tree it could crash into!

As for the mystery?  Can’t say!  It’s a clusterpuck (that’s Canadian for “boondoggle”)!  Thankfully, there are a FEW names to share:

Zoofest’s Kate Conner!  Scotland (via Toronto)’s John Mostyn! Gino Durante! Also from TO, Julia Hladkowicz! Jon Selig!

Thursday, July 17, 2014: Pre-Fest Workout

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Good news! Montreal is on the cusp of Just For Laughs – one of the world’s top (if not THE top) comedy festival.  Bad news: If you’re passing through Montreal for just a few days a) you’ll miss it, and b) you’re only here for a few days.   More good news!  This week’s show has a few comics who are part of this year’s festival!

Toronto’s DJ Demers is part of this year’s Homegrown Competition at JFL – an annual showcase for top up-and-coming Canadian comics.  Let’s show him Montreal loves hilarious comics – even if they are from Canada’s largest city!

Your host this week is a man who is no stranger to the MBar stage, Just For Laughs, or making people pee their pants in laughter.  Darren Henwood arrived on the shores of the St. Lawrence via steamship from his homeland of Scotland, nary a penny in his pocket.  Since arriving, he has built a vast comedy empire that includes him host his own show at Just For Laughs’ Zoofest!

Montreal’s own Morgan O’Shea is also appearing at the aforementioned Homegrown show.  He’s dropping by to do a set this week to gear up!

Australia’s Jon Bennett is not only performing TWO one-man shows as part of Zoofest, but he consumes random substances from medicine chests and then makes audiences of backpackers laugh really hard for 30 minutes!

This show will be ridiculous more ridiculous than those hats Pharrell WIlliams forces on our eyesight!

Also performing:  Dan Carin! Stephen Spinola! Jon Selig!

This is a mopey week in Montreal.   Our Jazz Festival has concluded. Our mega-comedy festival “Just For Laughs” opens up next week.  Such a festival-less summer week needs joy, laughs, and cheap booze.  Enter: This week’s show at MBar!!!

Rodney Ramsey headlines.  Parenthood hasn’t slowed this guy down. He’s done said comedy festival, CBC’s Debaters, and has been a regular at comedy clubs in Montreal for years plus THIS SHOW!!!! Come out and be a part of what could be the HIGHLIGHT of his career!

Jon Selig going to host and warm up your festival-less butts.  But he’s been on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, HBO Canada’s Funny As Hell, and contributed to a hilarious Simpsons-y baseball article for Grantland.com.

Also performing:  John St. Godard! Jess Salomon! Jason Yearow! Geoff Appelbaum! Jakub Stachurski!

Thursday, July 3, 2014: Generic July Comedy Ecstasy

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Comedy Hostel summer shows are the best (“the BEST!!!”, says Mabel).  The room is full of people speaking English with ridiculous accents, alcohol, and raging backpacker hormones.  To lube everyone up, stand-up comics hop onstage, speak into a microphone, and magical reactions happen (most of the time, anyway). This week’s show – while uh-MAY-zing – is really not much different than other weeks – a hilarious group of pro & amateur comics, pay-what-you-can show.

One of Montreal comedy’s favorites hosts this thing. Abdul Butt is home from Halifax.  His bosses at This Hour Has 22 Minutes told him to recharge his batteries, and come up with some amazingly new funny interview ideas for the coming season.  His buddy Jeff Schouela will close this out.  If you’re looking to learn about summer in Montreal, pay attention to Jeff’s set.

Also performing: Mike Lifshitz! Jacy Lafontaine! Mike Meo! Eric Arseneault! Jon Selig!

Perhaps a special guest? We never know!

Thursday, June 26, 2014: 3rd Annual “Aussie Rules Comedy”

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Australia: Continent. Nation. Breeding ground for drunken hecklers and also for some extremely funny people. Sadly, the vast majority of funny comics on this week’s show are not from Australia. Happily, our host and headliner are indeed penal-colony descendents. It’s the 3rd straight summer they’ve tag-teamed for this show, so fire up the barbie & bust out yer chazwozzers!

Our headliner this week is a treat, and we’re so glad he’s back in town for Montreal Fringe Festival and Zoofest. Jon Bennett is a Melbournian (is that a thing?) who’s rarely there – because he’s out travelling the world performing award-winning one-man shows. A master storyteller, and world traveller, you can read all about them and him at his website.   Don’t miss this!

Our host is Paul Worrall. He’s not from Melbourne, or Sydney, or Perth, or any Australian city you’re familiar with (unless you’re Australian). He’s been doing comedy since the dawn of time, and will ensure our ship sails smoothly.  Paul hosting for Jon is turning

Also performing: Tristan MacKinley! Bruno Ly! Leonard Yelle! Brad MacDonald! Jon Selig!

Thursday, June 19, 2014: Reunions!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Hot off a week where comics obliterated a drunken heckler, a new set of comics is set to meet and slowly get to know a brand new audience. But more importantly, this week is a week of reunions!

This week’s host is Eman! She’s performed at Just For Laughs, had her own Comedy Now! special, and headlines and hosts all over Canada. She’ll be reunited with mBar’s audience, with whom she always hits it off smashingly! SMASHINGLY!

Our headliner is Ali Hassan! We’re so NOT cutting & pasting his bio (which is TOTALLY worth reading, so just click here to get the giste of his credits! He’s a local guy who’s moved to Toronto to take over the world. He’s frikkin’ funny, and you will love what he has to say. He will be re-united with Eman, his BOOM co-creator! Together, their super-comedy powers will weaken you, but in a good way.

Also on this show: Zoofest’s Jason Hatrick! Not one, but TWO comics in from Vancouver for Montreal Fringe Festival: Strapless’ Megan Phillips and LAST week’s headliner, Shirley Gnome. GO CHECK OUT THEIR SHOWS!!!

Also: Gino Durante! Kuba Kierlancyzk! Jon Selig!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. Later on, a hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-think or can.

Come on by for around 8:45pm, Thursday night, and settle in for some drinks. Pitchers are just $12. That’s pretty sweet, right? 1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance) is the address. Thursday June 12, 2014: Invasions!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Montreal is under attack from fluffy balls of pollen floating through our atmosphere! To counter these highly sneeze-inducing jerks, Comedy Hostel is bringing in the ultimate in counter-offensives:

Comics from the Pacific Time Zone!

Our headliner is from British Columbia. She’s performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and is in town for Montreal’s Fringe. Shirley Gnome is a self-styled musical comedian and performer. Armed with only a guitar and a sassmouth, she belts out original tunes about the embarrassing, profound, and hilarious adventures that happen when bodies collide. Her music, while smothered in explicit language and racy humor, is sung with the voice of “an angel dry humping a cloud.”

She’ll be joined by fellow Western-type person, Spokane, Washington’s Zach Mandeville! We’re hoping these two westerners combine forces to vanquish the allergenic enemy!!!

Andrew Searles! who’s headlined this thing a bunch of times, finds himself in the hosting seat. He performs all over eastern Canada, has had his own one-man show, and has a bio page on his website!!! Read it!!!

The rest of this show is seriously stacked:

Paul Baluyot! Matt Gass! Emma Wilkie! Tim Rabnett! Shawn Stenhouse!

To take her place, we placed some calls to some very important higher-ups, and we’ve secured the services of Peter J. Radomski – he’s performed at Just For Laughs, been on The Daily Show and is the house MC for Bluelight Burlesque!

Hope to see you there!

Quarterbacking things is a comic who is also her own offensive line – DeAnne Smith! She’s currently competing on Last Comic Standing on NBC (the really large US TV nework that brought you Diff’rent Strokes, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Manimal)! Her other credits include multiple Just For Laughs festivals, The Craig Ferguson Show, and host of this week’s show. YES!!! Here’s a clip from her at Melbourne International Comedy Festival:

Closing this down will be the fireballing Heidi Foss! Heidi’s a top Canadian comic, and coming into this one with a stellar won-loss record. Her resume includes victories in stand-up, screen-writing, and comedy writing! Please welcome her to the MBar stage by watching this clip:

And the rest of the team: Emery Fine! Scott Carter! Vlad Levitt! Jon Selig!

This show is all grand, no prix!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can.

We’re also giving away a weekend pass to The Comedy Nest where you can see more amazing internationally-touring comedy acts. All you need to do is a) follow us on Twitter (@MTLComedyHostel) or “like” on FB

Come on by for around 8:45pm, Thursday night, and settle in for some drinks. Pitchers are just $12. That’s pretty sweet, right? 1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance) is the address. If you’re driving, St. Catherine is closed off between Berri & Papineau, so don’t think of taking it! If you’re an STM kinda person, get off at Metro Berri UQAM.

5-29-14: A Scottish Whodunnit

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

As you may (or probably don’t) know, we will be starting the show AFTER the Habs game ends throughout this playoff run – around 10:30. MBar’s a GREAT place to watch the game, so come by, order a pitcher, cheer on The Habs (or Rangers, if you’re a jerk) and then hang around for some comedy.  HOWEVER, if they’re toast by Thursday, we start at 8:45.

With a possible Habs game 6 on Thursday, and a late start, we can’t quite yet confirm our headliner.  He has kids (2 clues right there as to who it could be, Montreal comedy nerds!), so he has to be a bit adult. If he can’t make it because of a late start (*thanks* Habs & Rangers!!!!), We’ll leave it as a mystery for now.

OK, one more hint: It’s David Pryde. And he has confirmed he will be there early, or late. Don’t miss this. The man has performed on CBC’s “The Debaters” and headlines clubs all around Canada. Oh look! Here he is performing at Just For Laughs gala!

Our host has a Scottish accent (as Scottish people are wont to have). His life responsibilities go no farther than hosting latenight comedy shows, so he is most definitely on board! Darren Henwood will steward this week’s show!

Also performing:  Stephen Spinola! Jacob Greco! David Heti! Geoff Appelbaum! Jon Selig! Vincent Pimpare!

Regardless of whatever time the show starts, a hat will come around towards the end of it, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can (we’re not employed by the bar, we’re comics)!  1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance) is the address. If you’re an STM kinda person, it’s Metro Berri UQAM.

May 22, 2014: Post-Habs Game Laughs

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Comedy at MBar will follow Habs games on Thursday nights until their amazing playoff run is toast.  Not since chocolate & peanut butter boinked and gave birth to the famous Reese baby, have we seen such a delicious coupling!

Why deprive people of TWO things they really want and love? If the Habs go far enough, we’ll even present the Stanley Cup to the patrons of MBar (OK, that’s a stretch, but it would be totally awesome to drink Jaegermeister from The Cup while on a white leather couch and wearing an antler chandelier)!!!  All that to say, expect the show to start around 10:30. We’ll aim to get you out of there at a reasonable hour.  Montreal Canadiens playoff hockey and stand-up comedy.  Boom. Yeah. Thank us later.

Now, onto this week’s lineup:

Your headliner is a gal who once lambasted the Netherlands onstage at MBar in front of a 12-person Dutch band (check out the April 24, 2013 video).  Will lightning strike twice and see a bisexual stand-up comics convention pass through MBar?  Come find out, and see how Jess Salomon deals with THAT.

Also performing:

Rodney Ramsey! Tommy Marshall! Scott Carter! John St. Godard! From LA, it’s Zac James!

Hosting this thing, is the ubiquitous Jon Selig!

Once the game’s over, grab a seat near the stage.  Keep drinking, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can (we’re not employed by the bar, we’re comics)!  1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance) is the address. If you’re an STM kinda person, it’s Metro Berri UQAM.

May 15, 2014: Lazy Copy

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Week after week, Comedy Hostel team of copywriters try to come up with zany, kooky, quirky, clever ways to preview the forthcoming show, but this week – fuck that shit (we’ll take one on the chin from our creative director for those words)!! It’s spring!! Let’s cut to the darn chase so the team can go play outside)!!!

DeAnne Smith headlines this week’s show! She’s hilarious, has a gazillion credits, and her show Stand-Up and Strip Down is returning to 2014’s Just For Laughs!

Paul Baluyot is going to host this thing. He’s cool too. He’s also hilarious (geez, there aren’t that many synonyms for “funny”, are there?)!

Also performing: Brad McDonald! Mike Carrozza! Karl Knox! Eric Arseneault! Jon Selig! And the return of Mike Lifshitz!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can.

May 8, 2014: The Hype (and what to do with it)

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Once in a generation, comes an event so big, so meaningful, that the hype builds to a fever pitch and changes the course of humanity. Suffice to say, this week’s show, is not that event (cue the “sad trombone” music). But it’s a damn solid evening of laughter and frivolity, so join us and enjoy!

Fresh off a career week where he headlined a show at a dive bar and destroyed a drunken incoherent heckler the following night, Jon Selig seeks to build on momentum in his quest to become the world’s most highly improbable stand-up comic. Thankfully, whoever books the acts for this show lined up a honey of a lineup to make the crowd laugh.

The show is headlined by a guy who does the comedy in both the English and the French. Moreover, he’s funny in BOTH languages! MBar crowds love this guy, so we’re confident you’ll have a blast watching him – JC Surette!

Also making with the jokes: Geoffrey Appelbaum! James Manella! Carlin Potter! Emery Fine! Jacob Greco! The sketch comedy of Philsofish!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can.

Come on by for around 8:30pm, Thursday night, and settle in for some drinks. Pitchers are just $12. That’s pretty sweet, right? 1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance) is the address. Show up, feel free to park for free behind the hostel. If you’re an STM kinda person, it’s Metro Berri UQAM.

May 1, 2014: Montreal Season

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

If our shows in April felt like fun, imagine what shows in May will feel like. May is the beginning of some great times, and it’s here & real. It will crush you with AMAZINGNESS!!!!

To kick off “Montreal Season”, we have a total non-Montrealer who’s going host this thing! Dave Merheje! The only thing serious about this guy is his comedy resume: Just For Laughs, MTV Canada, voted Toronto’s Best Stand-Up Comic. Wow. Here he is on Just For Laughs TV:

Our headliner’s a local boy done good. He was scooped up by CBC TV’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes to go speak to people and be a smartass. Come laugh at things Abdul Butt says! Here he is interviewing former Quebec premiere Pauline Marois:

Also performing:
Jason Hatrick! Daniel Carin! Molly Brisebois! Leonard Yelle! Jakub Stachurski! Jon Selig!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can.

April 24, 2014: On the Cusp

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Last week’s Mike Ward show was ridiculous. A packed house with an amazing crowd, a great energy, and the comics taking advantage of everything to deliver big laughs before the headliner went up to tear the house down.  Thanks to all who came and supported the show!

This week is just as exciting! This is our last show in April. Rejoice! May is upon us, and as such Montreal is on the cusp of something big! It’s called “NOT Winter” – a Montrealer’s favourite season.  The coats have been mothballed, the only boots seen are ones worn for fashion, and toques are still worn by skaters and hipsters (they show NO gratitude for nice weather – off with their toques!!!).

Our comics are anything but hip or fashionble. At best they’re hilarious, but that’s it (just kidding, they’re nice people too!).  We start with our host. She’s loved whether she’s headlining at clubs all around Canada, on her own Comedy Now! TV special, or hosting at MBar, the very funny Eman! Here she is talking about her trip to Calgary:

Our headliner tours internationally (Canada AND America!), is a staple locally, and will make you snort beer through your nose, a round of applause for Jeff Schouela!

The rest of this week’s lineup is quite impressive! We’re paid a visit by Montreal’s premiere improv troupe, The On-The-Spot Players! A comic making it from Vermont (aka “American Maple”) Tim Trotochaud! Plus plain ol’ local – yet- hilarious – local stand-ups Jess Salomon! Walter J. Lyng! Francois Toussignant! Jon Selig!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can.

Come on by for around 8:30pm, Thursday night, and settle in for some drinks. Pitchers are just $12. April 17, 2014: A *Really* Unholy Return to MBar

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Please note: We’re BACK at MBar this week and for quite some time – 1245 rue St. Andre (back entrance), Metro Berri-UQAM, 8:30pm.  Free parking behind the building!

Jews believe that Easter commemorates the brunch where Jesus walked on wine, ordered an unleavened bagel at a deli, sent it back because the cream cheese had chives, and where Mel Gibson simultaneously crucified his own career and drunkenly denigrated a female police officers – all at once!

Easter’s not the only theme to draw on when writing up this week’s show. It’s spring, which means the holy rebirth and resurrection of Comedy Hostel shows at MBar after a 2-month absence! For this holy occasion, we lined up the most unholy of headliners  – Mike Ward!!! There’s no point in me describing this man – that’s what websites are for. Comedy Hostel doesn’t have enough server space to list his credits, so visit his website to read how exciting an occasion this is. Or, just watch a clip:

Your guide on this spiritual and comedic journey is none other than a man who is too familiar with Easter, and extremely funny, the pride of Flin Flon, Manitoba himself – John St. Godard! He recently inherited that title from this guy.

The rest of this show is funnier & more stacked than a Quebec election running a bunch of racist candidates! Also performing: Morgan O’Shea! Emma Wilkie! Shawn Stenhouse! Geena Granter! Jon Selig! And popping in from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, is former local boy Abdul Butt! This night will be huge, Jerry, HUGE!

Come on in sit down, enjoy the show. A hat will come around, and we’d love a donation of $8-10, but pay-what-you-can.

March 6, 2014: Feeling at Home on Foreign Soil

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

This week’s show is at Hostel Montreal Central, 1586 St. Hubert.  It’s Week #3 of Comedy Hostel’s stay in a foreign hostel.  Our comics have experienced great new things such as a mantle on which they can place their beverage while performing and (AND!!!!)  a wireless mic.  Both are refreshing changes of pace from the creature comforts of MBar’s couches, plastic antlers & disco balls.

This week’s headliner, Paul Baluyot makes his first appearance in the lobby of HMC.  He’s performed in comedy clubs all across Canada, but this will easily exceed his wildest comedy dreams.  Come watch this milestone in Paul’s comedy career. You will laugh pretty hard – perhaps even at some of his jokes!

Jon Selig will be your host.  He’s been performing all across town, and even recently told jokes to old white people in the comedy hotbed of Orlando, Florida.  He was on the Daily Show a year ago, and it’s been downhill from there.  Let him be your tour guide and spiritual advisor on this quest for whatever it is you seek. Specifics aren’t his specialty.

You’re gonna LOVE this lineup.  Seriously, bra-heims – it’s stacked like flapjacks!

Vlad Levitt! Brad McDonald! Ali Mohammedi! Scott Carter! Geoff Appelbaum!

Through March, we’ll be holding this show at Hostel Montreal Central’s bar (1586 St. Hubert, just above de Maisonneuve). So get there, grab a Unibroue, pull up a chair or stool, & get cozy.   The show is “Pay-What-You-Can”. Come in, sit down and enjoy. We’re hoping you can afford an $8-10 donation. You’ll be MORE than fine with it by the time the hat comes around. See you then!

International man of mystery George Hamilton Braithwaite hosts this edition. He comes to Montreal by way of Detroit, Michigan, by way of the United Kingdom. We’re not his biographer, so we’ll let him tell you his damn life story.

Our headliner’s just a regular, boring Montrealer. But he’s funny. Jeff Schouela does the comedy all over Canada & ‘Murica.  Come laugh at the shtick!

Also performing in a lobby: Jacqueline Pirico! Leonard Yelle! Tommy Marshall! Jon Selig! Birthday-Boy Jason Hatrick!

Thursday, February 20, 2013: Important – change of venue!!!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Please note: This week’s show will take place at Hostel Montreal Central: 1586 rue St. Hubert, just 3 blocks from M-Montreal.

Mardi Gras is still a few weeks away, and the next episode of HBO’s “True Detective” doesn’t air for another ENTIRE week. This week’s Comedy Hostel will be a HIGHLY acceptable substitute to aid you through your withdrawal AND have you doing a zydeco dance on Montreal’s snowy bayou. Let’s list some reasons:

a) If hard-boiled detectives had comedian counterparts, Martin Hart and Rust Cohle ‘s most intense qualities would merge to translate to the hilarity that is headliner David Pryde!! He’s done a gazillion Just For Laughs galas, and headlines across Canada. Don’t believe it? Check this out:

b) It’s hosted by JC Surette. He’s from New Brunswick, the Louisiana of Canada (“Cajun” comes from “Acadien”. Look it up!)! MBar loves this guy!

The rest of the lineup is a veritable crawfish gumbo of local comedic talent:

Jess Salomon! Paul Ash! Jason Yearow! True Detective addict Shawn Stenhouse! JG Saulnier! Jon Selig!

If this post made no sense, you have not seen HBO’s True Detective. Or heard of it. Or both. Check this click here to get a taste of the hubbub (note: science has recently proven that hubbubs do in fact have taste).

This happens at MBar, the basement bar of M Montreal Hostel! Please enter via the door of 1245 St. Andre (below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

February 13 & 14, 2014: One Week, Two Shows!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

IMPORTANT classes you took made you take a make-up class up if you missed one. Classes like driver’s education, home economics, and gym all forced you to come because they just were so darn vital to a quality education.

Comedy Hostel has a slightly different philosophy:

“We aren’t important, and neither are you.”

That may sound harsh, but take solace that we believe we’re LESS important than you, and must offer you retribution pay. To do so we’re not only offering you:

a) Our regular Thursday show, but also:
b) A make-up show in lieu of last week’s cancelled show on Valentine’s Day (February 14 for you lonely people). Attendance isn’t compulsory, but highly encouraged! On to the lineups:

Showtime is 8:45pm.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Newcomers to Montreal often note that there aren’t many tattooed, mustachioed, hilarious Scottish dudes floating around. To them, we say “we have one!”. He’s hosting this week’s show, so you best not miss this. Comedy duo “Darren Henwood & The Accent” host this week’s Comedy Hostel. These two quick wits combine to form a SuperWit and will be this week’s protector and defender of the Comedy Hostel realm.

This week’s headliner is about to embark on a Canada-wide tour as producer and comic of the Underground Comedy Tour, he’s done Just For Laughs, been on CBC’s Debaters, it’s Rodney Ramsey (massive applause NOW)!!!

Rounding out the evening’s undercard:

Jacob Greco! Jeff Schouela! Molly Brisebois! Karl Knox! Eric Arsenault! Jon Selig!

Friday, February 14, 2014

To show our love to single, lonely people and couples who are fighting & on the rocks, it’s a BONUS show! Of course, happy loving couples are MORE than welcome. Just don’t get upset if others scorn you with their eyes.

Some names you’ll see on this evening, include Morgan O’Shea! Scott Carter! Jakub Stachurski! Emma Wilkie! George Hamilton Braithwaite! Jon Selig!

Showtime from Friday night 8:00pm.

MBar’s HAPPY HOUR follows the show (10-11pm)!  Check these specials out:

Beer Blanche de Chambly, Sleeman Lager, Sleeman Rousse – $4 pints.

Booze Sky Vodka, Appleton Rum, Jack Daniels – $3 drinks.

Both happen at MBar!  Please enter via the door on the back left of M Montreal Hostel that has a big “M” on it. M Montreal is located at 1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

January 30, 2014: A Blaze-Free Show with Eddy King

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Last week’s show was marred by an ugly fire across from MBar. One massive fire in the entire history of this show is ONE TOO MANY. However, this week’s lineup WILL set you guys on FIYA!!!

This week, comedy royalty will burn things down with his stuff! We’re excited to welcome Just For Laughs veteran Eddy King to MBar! Eddy’s a monster on both the French and English comedy scenes and we’re stoked for his performance! Check THIS CLIP OUT:

Vlad Levitt is our host. This guy may look and sound like a 19th century Bolshevik painter, but he’s one of the funniest dudes in Montreal, and would nationalize our banks, ban religion or property ownership – because then, what would there to make jokes about??? OK, onto this week’s lineup. Also performing:

Morgan O’Shea! Gabe Masson! James Manella! Skip Philips! Jeremy Dobski! Jon Selig!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, January 30th at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel(1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

Thursday, January 23rd, 2013: FIGHT WINTER!!!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

This week at MBar, we will FIGHT WINTER…tooth AND nail.  We will band together – comics and audience – to put this lousy season to an END.  We’ll need manpower and technology! So bring your hair dryers, blowtorches, microwave ovens,  overheated laptops,, curling irons, bonfires, 90’s supermodels, and bottles of Siracha! Oh, and let’s not forget this week’s mind-melting lineup of comics!

Everyone’s favorite teacher is back to host this week’s edition of Stand-Up at the M!  John St. Goddard grabs the mic, and warms the crowd up for the other comics. These include our headliner, the flame-haired Jess Salomon who’s on SUN TV  (my, THAT credit’s timely, coincidental, and thousands of degrees!).

Also performing:

“Piping” Paul Baluyot!  Emma “En Fuego” Wilkie!  Daniel “It’s Like a Sauna In Here” Carin! Kate “Blisters In the Sun” Conner!  Brad “Pan-Seared” MacDonald! “Sweating” Jon Selig!

We even had a custom-recorded theme song, created JUST FOR THIS SHOW! We hope you dig it:

Thursday, January 16, 2014: The Verdict Is In!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

This show’s been on trial for well over a year,  and the jury’s rendered its verdict:  Comedy Hostel is Guilty. On MANY charges, including:

Hilarity.  Fun.  Unpredictability.  Best crowd in Montreal.  Cheap beer.  Partially Australian.

The sentence for the show will be served by this week’s lineup of comics.   They’re led by ex-Montrealer, current Los Angelino, Rishi Arya.  He’s in town making everyone laugh, and he’ll grab this bull by its horns and lead it into the ring.

Our headliner’s an MBar favorite, Andrew Searles!  Andrew has been named in the “Top 10 Best Stand-up Comedians in Montreal” four years straight by the Montreal Mirror, heard on XM Satellite Radio’s “Laugh Attack”, hosted the Montreal show “U Got Jokes” featuring comedians from BET, briefly seen on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, a role in the Kidnapper Films short production “SharkBoy” which debuted at the 2004 Just for Laughs Comedia Festival, and had his own comedy special debut in 2013 on National television for the new Canadian stand-up comedy show “No Kidding”.

Also performing:  Nour Hadidi! Jakub Stachurski! Shawn Stenhouse! Jon Selig!  And MBar virgins Chris Venditto & (Fringe Montreal veteran) Gerard Harris!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, January 16th at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel(1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

Thursday, January 9, 2014: “Screw January” with Dea & Gui!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

The Christmas tree’s on the curb. That carton of eggnog in your fridge has spoiled. Those holiday hook-ups with your ex are toast as a result of that “new year’s resolution” garbage.  The cold has frozen our grey matter. January’s looking grim.

Suck it up, wussbags!  Thursdays at MBar are the equivalent of a recurring shots of morphine!  This circus will leave you breathless, all without contortionists and French clowns.

This week’s ringmaster/host is more than a gal with a chair and whip – she’s frikkin’ hilarious, and has the street cred to prove it: DeAnne Smiths a  Just For Laughs’/Melbourne International Comedy Festival/Craig Ferguson Show – and most prestigiously – an MBar favourite!

Our headliner is making his MBar debut. He acts, does standup all over Canada, and is a real stand-up guy.  When DeAnne calls “Guido Cocomello” to the stage, give him a rousing ovation!

Also performing:

Scott Carter! Gino Durante! Jason Yearow! Stefan Peterson! Jon Selig! Travis Cannon!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, January 9th at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel(1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

If your head’s still in pain from two nights prior, that’s an indication you may have a drinking problem. Thankfully, ongoing consumption is a fabled cure for alcoholism, and thankfully not everything you read on comedy show invites has to make sense. To that end, Thursday’s show is a belated New Year’s celebration where you can toss out your “no drinking” and “no laughing” resolutions ($12 pitchers and amazing comedy helps that along nicely).

What better way to kick off a New Year of Thursdays at MBar than with Australian funnydude Paul Worrall making his return to MBar? The show’s also hosted by the show’s curator, Jon Selig!

Pretty special guest dropping in thanks to unforeseen circumstances: It’s Just-For-Laughs’er/Strombo Show Comedy Panelist, Ali Hassan!

Also performing on this magical night of vice: Ex-Montrealer/Current Torontonian, Patrick Hakeem! Toronto gals Sivi Santoso and Karen Mitton! Lifetime Montrealers Jason Hatrick & Carlin Potter!

Thursday, December 26, 2013: Boxing Day Blowout!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

First-off:  Big thanks to everyone who donated to last week’s food/clothing drive!  We collected four boxes for both Sun Youth and the Old Brewery Mission.  Please donate to these extremely worthwhile, hard-working organizations if you haven’t had a chance. On to this week’s show…

Boxing Day 2013 means only 364 shopping days until Christmas!  Don’t get caught with your pants down (unless that’s a thing of yours). Make sure your loved ones know you’ve thought of them when next holiday season comes around! Take advantage of our Boxing Day extravaganza and send them to this Thursday’s Comedy Hostel show. You’ll save squat, but what do you expect from a pay-what-you-can comedy show with $12 pitchers of beer, an awesome lineup of hilarious comics? An international (and local) audience?  Your loved ones will be grinning until next Christmas, so get an early jump on things!

Headlining this week’s show is Toronto’s David Heti.  He has been described as a “Darker Woody Allen who doesn’t give a fuck what the audience thinks”. It’s true – he doesn’t. So, you rebels out there should swing by and take notes on how it’s done.

This show is hosted by Dr. Comedy Hostel himself, Jon Selig (follow him on Twitter already, will you?).  He’s a Jew who’s ready to move on from all things Christmas and spread his own good cheer.

Also performing:  In from LA, Rishi Arya! Geoff Appelbaum! Gabriel Koury! Mariam Khan!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, December 26 at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel(1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

Changes to this week’s show

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Hey all…

Regrettably, Guido Cocomello can’t perform at this week’s show. Some urgent stuff has come up which Guido must attend to.

Thankfully, we have a truly amazing replacement in Chris Locke! Chris has performed at Just For Laughs’ festivals in Toronto and Montreal and just recorded his OWN COMEDY CD!!!

Also joining the comedic fray, is Montreal’s prodigal daughter (now in Los Angeles) Bianca Yates!!!

You’re in good hands, MBar…you’re in good hands.

Please bring a non-perishable food-item or your used winter clothes to the show on Thursday. We’ll drop them off at Sun Youth and The Old Brewery Mission. Thanks, see you then.

Thursday, December 19: A Very Merry Cocomello!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Happy Holidays! This is the last show before many celebrate the birth of a man who has been part of so many standup comedy bits. And Jesus Christ, we have a ripsnorter of a humdinger lined up to commemorate  It’s our Christmas gift to our local and foreign audience!

If you’re local, let’s do our part this holiday season: bring a non-perishable food item or a piece of warm clothing (or old coat). We’ll drop the food off at Sun Youth, and we’ll drop the clothes off at the Old Brewery Mission. These are two of Montreal’s hardest-working charitable organizations. We’re hoping you can help people in need. On to the show:

Our headliner’s making his MBar debut: Guido Cocomello performs all across Canada, as a standup and actor.  Give him a warm welcome, and in return he’ll give your sense of humor a prostate exam (of sorts).

With Movember in the rearview mirror, he goes back to being to Moustache champion of Montreal.  He’s also hosting this week’s show – always a treat!  Last time Darren hosted, he MC’ed and judged the 1st Annual MBar Rocket-Scarfing Competition!

Joining us from Toronto, it’s one of this country’s funniest dudes – Chris Locke!

Also onstage: Emma Wilkie! In from NYC, it’s Molly Brisebois! Back from his weeklong hiatus in Florida:  Jon Selig!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, December 19 at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel (1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

Thursday, December 12, 2013: Let’s Celebrate!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

It’s not that often that Comedy Hostel producer Jon Selig isn’t around to boss comics, around, bomb for 10 straight minutes, and make life miserable for everyone within a 1 KM radius. So for just this week, you should come take advantage of his week-off to enjoy a stellar night of comedy at M-Bar!

First-time host Jason Hatrick is making up his postponed hosting gig, with…this week’s hosting gig! The Comedy Tri-Athlete (a term trademarked by Jon Selig) does standup, improv, sketch! YES.

Our headliner is Captain Knife Fight himself, J. Walter Lyng – which sound a lot cooler than his real name (which sounds fake) – Walter. J. Lyng. Come watch him give our audience a flying elbow off the 2nd turnbuckle. No way that guy can climb to the top turnbuckle.

Also performing: Kate Konner! Karl Knox! Tommy Marshall! Eric Arsenault! JG Saulnier! Paul Baluyot!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, December 12 at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel (1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

Thursday, December 5: Start Training!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Beating the winter blahs takes a sustained, concerted effort. Get out there and do stuff! Not outdoor activities though – they lead to colds, frostbite, and strep throat. However, Comedy Hostel shows are on the “recommended” list. They offer all kinds of mental and physical benefits for you to feel good, and walk out of there buzzing.

The show’s in the hands of a couple of Montreal comedy veterans this week – Jeff Schouela, fresh off performing all over the wild West (Canada and the USA), headlines the M, and it’s hosted by Kris Dulgar! Check Jeff performing in Toronto:

Who else is on this show? Glad you asked! Jakub Stachurski & Jacob Greco show up – they’ll play a match of Boggle to settle the debate as to who’s spelling their name correctly. Also: Nour Hadidi! Leonard Yelle! Jon Selig!

We’re joined by The World Improv Federation, led by Greg Hamilton & Geoff Appelbaum!

Thursday, November 28: ThanksGivUkkah with DeAnne Smith!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Thanksgivukkah! An overlapping of American Thanksgiving, and the epochal Jewish holiday of Hannukah. This merger of turkey and potato pancakes is the Haley’s Comet of Converging Celebrations!

We’re going to celebrate this trivial occasion with an American headliner, less Jews than normal, and loads of comics who are indifferent to such nonsense.

We’re seriously stoked! This week’s headliner is one-time Yank DeAnne Smith! DeAnne returns to MBar after a year of performances which included The Late Late Show With Craig FergusonJust For Laughs, the Edinburgh Fringe! She will douse you in oily cranberry sauce if you miss this show! Here’s a clip of DeAnne at the Melbourne Comedy Fest from a couple of years back:

This week’s host is guy who’s demolishing stages coast to…well…Montreal. Morgan O’Shea blew away the Maritimes in September, and the guy’s comedy momentum personified – whatever that means!

Also on the show to ring in the season of commercialism:  Shawn Stenhouse! Vlad Levitt! Gina Freeman! John St. Godard! Ali Mohammadi! Jon Selig!

It all happens 8:45, Thursday, November 28th at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel (1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

November 21 & 23, 2013: Yeah, That’s Right – TWO shows!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Let’s cut the usual cutesy-intro stuff.:

There is a second show this week.  You read that correctly.  In addition to our staple-riffic Thursday show, we’re doin’ Saturday, November 23 at MBar!  We’ll discuss the Thursday show via the super-secret code-name of “Thursday Show”, and we’ll give the Saturday show, the stealthy nickname of “Saturday Show”.

Thursday Show

This week, we present Montreal’s premiere Judeo-Islamo-alliance.  Christians, Atheists & Klingons need be wary of how funny our host and headliner are. Hindus &  Buddhists – you’re in the clear. Everyone’s super Just For Laughs’ & recent Boston Comedy Festival alum Eman hosts this shin-digeredoo, and it’s headlined by a gal who’s everywhere these days, Jess Salomon!

We have a one-of a kind lineup! I mean, they’re all literally one-of-a-kind, but you’ll like the cut of this one’s gib: Gino Durante! Jeremy Dobski! Steven Trepanier!  Jacqui Pirico! And visiting us from Fordovia (as Rob Ford will some day rename Toronto) DJ Demers!

Saturday Show

NB:  Show will start at 8pm SHARP.  Swing by for 7:30 to “pre-game”.

Some negotiations are still taking place, but we can confirm that Mike Carrozza, Emma Wilkie, Chris Sandiford, John St. Godard have all given their verbal committment to perform.

Both shows happen at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel (1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

The show is “Pay-What-You-Can”. Come in, sit down and enjoy. We’re hoping you can afford a $6-10 donation. You’ll be MORE than fine with it by the time the hat comes around! See you on Thursday AND Saturday!

Thursday, November 14: The Kitchen Ninja Returns!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

This is such a depressing, time of year. It gets dark early. No festivals to attend, no cheap excuses to dress up in slutty or dorky costumes, and no presents to receive. Thankfully, Thursdays at MBar has something more fun than playing with cute puppies & kittens on a ray of sunshine after taking a cocktail of antidepressants!

The Kitchen Ninja Ali Hassan’s back! He’s a Canadian comedy juggernaut and will DESTROY the depression that is in our midst! He appears nightly on CBC’s “Tonight with George Stroumboulopoulos”, has performed at multiple Just For Laughs, and headlines clubs all over Canada. If you miss this, you’ll feel eternal shame and guilt.

This week’s host is the mainstay of Comedy Hostel, the omnipresent/never-fully-present, Jon Selig!

We have an extremely funny batch of comics to help you pummel the November Blues:

Old-schoolahs Kris Dulgar! Geoff Appelbaum!
Two MBar debut-ers: Miriam Khan & Adam Susser!

Why not RSVP and invite your friends with a FB invitation? They have all your information anyway!

Halloween Night, 2013: At MBar, Comics Judge *YOU*

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Halloween parties riff on the morbid themes of “death”, “fear”, and “dentistry”, but this one’s different. It starts with a comedy show in a hostel bar ON Halloween Night and has: a) positive, happy travellers; b) cheap alcohol; and c) uproarious comics. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

How about you not being able to win free stuff because you decided to be lame and not wear a costume? That would be HORRIFYING! For once, comics will judge the audience – out loud. So, wear something scary. Or funny. Or – like Miley Cyrus – both! Onto the lineup:

“And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name.” Revelation 13:1.

The Bible knows squat. The true beast has TEN heads. Scottish whirling dervish Darren Henwood leads the other 9 on this ridonkulous evening of filth, pestilence, & destruction!

Peter J. Radomski will close the show by plunging us into a morbid Halloween darkness!

Other funny heads:
George Hamilton Braithwaite!
Anne-Marie Dupras & Annie Deschamps!
Scott Carter!
Mike Meo!
Jon Selig!
The MBar debut of Travis Cannon!
And a farewell to: Michael Lifshitz!

It all happens 8:30, Thursday, Oct. 31st at MBar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel (1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Don’t even THINK of wearing a costume for this show. Do that next week as our show falls right on Halloween! Think about what you’re going to wear but in the meantime, just come and watch some funny folks tell their jokes.

Jakub Stachurski brings his rabid hosting skills to MBar, and Paul Baluyot will close the evening down. He’s been spending his weekends doing some hard-ass comedy clubbin’. The show’s in good hands with these two bookending things. Here’s Paul “learning” what CouchSurfing’s all about:

Also performing:

Chris Sandiford! Mike Lifshitz! John St. Godard! And making a postponed, 1st-time appearance on the MBar stage, Jacqueline Pirico!

This week’s show is also on special guest alert. We’ll sound it if someone exciting shows up.

Also: $11 pitchers of Sleeman ($4.50 pints) & $4 shots and the best & most international crowd in town!

Thursday, October 17: Compromising Positions

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

No, you won’t walk into MBar‘s men’s room and see a couple of guests in some really awkward position (or, perhaps you will)! But, if you come to this week’s show your comedy integrity will be compromised because this week, we have TWO headliners vs. the long-timey standard of just one!

Vlad Levitt‘s en fuego. His first YouTube video’s up, & he’s fresh off a sellout performance at Theatre St. Catherine! Emma Wilkie‘s also on FIYA! She recently opened for a big-timey comic at a club. Together, the will compromise your non-laughability! You’ve been warned!

Jon Selig will amble onstage to host this baby. Jon feels weird about describing himself in the third person, but rest assured he wouldn’t give himself the job of host if he couldn’t handle the gig (some of you are thinking “what a jerk – he can’t say anything nice about HIMSELF!”).

Also performing: Jon Malanos! Leonard Yelle! Tobin Thompson! Daniel Fitzpatrick, and Mr. TSC himself, Alain Mercieca!

Also: $11 pitchers of Sleeman ($4.50 pints) & $4 shots and the best & most international crowd in town!

It all happens 8:30, Thursday, Oct 3rd at www.m-montreal.com/bar in the basement of M Montreal Hostel (1245 St. Andre, below St. Catherine, Berri-UQAM metro). Please enter via the door on the back left of the hostel that has a big “M” on it. Parking in the back of the hostel is included!

Thursday, October 10: Ali Hassan, Martha Chaves, Darren Henwood!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

It’s time for us to give thanks.  Yes American visitors to MBar, Canada has a Thanksgiving that’s different than yours, and no, we’re not saying that either Comedy Hostel or M-Bar are deities or worthy of higher praise – although some lower praise isn’t completely out of the question. This show’s always fun! NB: No turkey, just laughs.

In order to give thanks to MBar and local crowds who frequent this show, we have a line-up that’s stacked like a brick shipyard!

Our host is a tattooed, mustachioed, Scottish teddy bear unless you tell him to go f*** himself for absolutely no apparent reason, which someone once chose to do. At that point he will become the Walter White of comedy, and come after you until you say his name. If you respond “Darren Henwood”, he may let you off the hook.

Toronto’s a big place. It also has some massive personalities. We’re fortunate enough to have one, maybe even TWO of them cramming into Montreal this Thursday!

Ali Hassan: Just for Laughs’ veteran; Lead comedy panelist on the CBC’s George Strombolopolis Show; Kitchen Ninja. Other credits we’re too lazy to type; EXTREMELY funny.  Check this (long-ish clip) out:

Martha Chaves: Gazillion-time Just For Laughs vet, Halifax & Winnipeg Comedy Fest alumus, Nicaraguan, upcoming guest on The Comedy Hostel Podcast! Check THIS out!

Old friends Emery Fine, Nour Hadidi and Karl Knox return! New ones like Jacob Greco join us!

Click here to RSVP via the Facebooks!
Also: $11 pitchers of Sleeman ($4.50 pints) & $4 shots and the best & most international crowd in town!

Thursday, October 3: Freaky Thursday!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Recovering from the as-of-yet-unseen Breaking Bad Finale? Rev up your minds again, because Thursday at MBar, they will be re-blown. Allow us to elaborate…

Rodney Ramsey is a man who’s hosted Comedy Hostel in the past, yet never headlined.

Walter J. Lyng is also a man. He’s headlined Comedy Hostel, yet never hosted.

This coming Thursday, these two comics will (*gasp!!!*) SWITCH ROLES!!! Walter hosts! Rodney Headlines! This is the Freaky Friday of all stand-up comedy shows. We promise this will be way better than bad Disney movies that were remade for shameless cash grabs! Insanity, right!??!?!?

Here’s Rodney talking about mom’s love of hockey & technology:

We also present the first-ever sketch team at our show – Thundertickle (love the name!) will bask in MBar’s violet (or is it mauve) light for the first time! Don’t miss this.  Say you’re coming via (or share) our FB invite.

Also performing:

COMEDY HOSTEL PODCAST E6: KARL KNOX & NEW ORLEANS’ COMIC WILD BILL DYKES!

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

E6 is here!

Host Jon Selig (@jonselig)’s latest co-host is veteran Montreal stand-up comic Karl Knox! He’s back on the scene after a break, and he’s got stuff to say about the world we live in (does he EVER!). Karl has a background in radio, grew up both all over Canada & abroad, and loves/hates his politics. In a rare moment of real substance on this podcast, he shares his experience of living in apartheid-era South Africa in the late 1960’s, and discusses some other favourite places to visit.

Jon & Karl are joined over Skype by recent Los Angeles arrival & stand-up comic “Wild” Bill Dykes (@WildBillDykes)! Bill is a native of New Orleans, but he can serve southern rednecks like Emeril dishes the gumbo! He shares his insights on life in the South (he touches on a bunch of ‘em states), the people, bein’ a “LIB-url” in the South, and tell’s y’alls where to go eat and drink in NOLA. Oh, Bill likes/hates talking politics as well. He and Karl are clearly travelomedy podcasting soulmates.

Karl will be performing at Stand-Up at the ‘M’ on Thursday, August 29, headlined by DeAnne Smith! Visit Comedyhostel.com for the details.

Bill Dykes performs all over LA and the South, among other places. Get ALL his coordinates at: www.billdykes.com.

Comedy Hostel Podcast E4: Theatrical nation-builder Gerard Harris & German comic Felix Henry

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Why visit countries when you can just start your own??? If you’re road-weary and megalomaniacal, you should check out Gerard Harris‘ (@gerardharris) show at Just For Laughs’ Zoofest “Let’s Start A Country“! The loquacious Gerard joins host Jon Selig (@jonselig) to explain steps you can take to do so. Gerard explains why his debated birthplace of Slough (in the UK) is even worse a place than The Office (UK) led us all to believe, and how Brits end up here in Montreal.

Apologies for crappy sound quality in the 1st half! Jon sounds more distant than he usually seems.

In the 2nd half, sound quality improves as Jon & Gerard are joined by German stand-up comic Felix Henry! Felix adores Montreal! He performs stand-up in English all over Europe. There’s only one topic that Jewish hosts like Jon & Gerard can harp on when meeting a German comic like Felix, so we get that out of the way. Felix and Gerard express their mutual love of Dublin’s comedy scene, debate Austria’s contribution to global culture, and Felix tackles the stereotype that Germans have no sense of humour. Oh, and Hitler’s place in the history of “monsters” is debated.

Note: Apologies for what can be described as “technical difficulties” but is really just Jon’s “ineptitude”.

Go see Gerard & E1 guest Shane Adamczak in Let’s Start A Country, June 13-20!

Come see Felix perform at Stand-Up at the “M” on July 18!

COMEDY HOSTEL PODCAST, E3: SCOTT CARTER & KRISTEN SARAH

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Episode 3 of The Comedy Hostel Podcast is here!

Host Jon Selig (@jonselig) recently attended a conference for travel bloggers. Yes, that’s a thing. He met this week’s guest actress/travel vlogger Kristen Sarah (@HTGlobe) there. Travel vlogging is also a thing.

Prior to calling Kristen, Montreal stand-up comic Scott Carter (@slashMcDeadly) skateboarded over to join Jon at The Brick Wall to be funny (and sweaty). Scott shares his loathing for his hometown in British Columbia and his feelings on his parents. He also recalls not getting robbed or hurt in Serbia.

Kristen talks about visiting Paraguay at age 18, her travels to India, needing to pee while on a long-bus voyage, and a solution she discovered to resolve the problem. She has a YouTube video you can watch that will explain more about this urinary phenomenon.

Follow her travels at HopScotchTheGlobe.

Catch Scott Carter (aka @SlashMcDeadly on Twitter) at Stand-Up at the ‘M’ on July 11!
